Sotubo urges greater participation in bond market

The Chief Executive Officer, Stanbic IBTC Stockbrokers Limited, Mr. Oladele Sotubo, has urged retail investors to take advantages of the benefits of investing in bonds.

According to him, they stand to gain a lot by investing in the bond market, a development which can help to deepen the capital market as a whole and boost the nation’s economy.

Sotubo spoke in Lagos at a workshop organised by SISL in collaboration with the Nigerian Stock Exchange, a statement from the firm said.

At the workshop, which focused on strategies for harnessing the benefits in retail bonds, Sotubo said that the positioning and transformation of Nigeria’s bond market into a vibrant investment window required the collaboration of all stakeholders.

He said, “A major objective in organising this workshop is to enlighten investors and stakeholders on the the workings of the bond market and the numerous benefits in investing in retail bonds.

“We believe the forum will help in boosting retail investors’ participation in both the primary and secondary markets, and ultimately, help to deepen Nigeria’s bond market.”

He explained that the workshop was also aimed at providing useful insight into how to diversify investment portfolios.

Sotubo pledged that SISL would continue to come up with initiatives and strategies to keep stakeholders, especially investors, properly informed about developments in the capital market as that would help them to make the right decisions.

The Chief Executive Officer, NSE, Mr. Oscar Onyema, who was represented by the Exchange’s Head, Product Management, Mr. Dipo Omotoso, highlighted the steps that had been taken to strengthen the capital market.

The statement quoted him as describing the investment opportunities in the capital market and Nigeria’s economy as huge.

He also urged investors to participate actively in the retail bonds space.
