AFCON 2017: Renard tips Pharaohs for title

Morocco head coach, Herve Renard has tipped Egypt to lift the Gabon 2017 AFCON trophy.

Renard who spoke after his side bowed to the Pharaohs in a keenly contested quarter final match decided in Stade de Port-Gentil Sunday night said Egypt has bounced back and playing the best of football.

He stressed that the Hector Cupper tutored side that is yet to concede a goal in the tournament would be difficult to beat. Egypt would tomorrow face 2013 finalists, Burkina Faso in one of the semi final showdowns.

“Egypt’s rivals should be careful, because Egypt is back,” Renard told beIN Sports after the game.

The Lions of Atlas were narrowly beaten by the Pharaohs of Egypt 1-0 in a quarter-final game at the Stade de Port-Gentil in the Gabonese city of Port-Gentil.

Accomplished tactician Renard believes that Egypt, who are the most successful nation in the AFCON history with seven titles, are back to their usual best.

“Egypt’s rivals should be careful, because Egypt is back.  It was very difficult to perform in this poor pitch but Egypt dealt with it very well and played a good game. They have a good coach and they snatched a winner after a defensive error,” Renard told beIN Sports after the game.

The accomplished French tactician who had before now won the AFCON trophy with Cote d’Ivoire and Zambia was however full of praise for his wards insisting that they did well in defeat.

“We played a good game and we did our best against a tough opponent. I’m proud despite the loss,” he said. It would be noted that Renard had before the start of the AFCON campaign said Morocco had only a realistic chance of reaching the quarter final.
