The Executive Vice President, Greater Washington Limited (GWL), Mr Owolabi Awosan, has said that one of the challenges faced by the company is that there is no dedicated aircraft for domestic air cargo logistics business in the country.
Awosan, who said this in Lagos while speaking on the activities of GWL and the challenges faced by the company in the course of carrying out its business, also informed that over 50 per cent of cargoes coming into Nigeria are carried by international airlines.
He explained that unlike on the international routes that have dedicated aircraft for air cargo logistics such as Cargolux and Lufthansa Cargo, the domestic routes does not have that, as the same aircraft that fly passengers also carry cargoes in their under belies .
He also explained that another challenge is the lack of airplanes with big under belly that can transport large amount of cargo at a go, adding that the absence of awareness about air cargo logistics is a challenge to the operators in the business.
Awosan stated that in view of these challenges, GWL is using the media and social media to create awareness for Nigeria to embrace air cargo logistics business.
He pointed out that with this ongoing awareness, Nigeria will soon discover that air cargo logistics is relatively cheaper, faster and safer, compared to transporting cargo by any other means of transportation.
The executive Vice President argued that with air cargo logistics, the pilfering of cargo often experienced in road transport is eliminated, adding that integrity is the bedrock of the business.
On the possibility of customers tracking their air cargo at any point in time, Awosan said that it can be done using the company’s online real time
According to him, “Through our “online real time” solution which caters to tracking of consignments, incident reporting and delivery mandates; we can keep track of goods sent through our channels from their point of origin to destination which helps to minimize associated supply chain risks”.
He pointed out that Greater Washington ‘s mastery of air cargo logistics is enhanced by its sound knowledge of local and international trade customs and practices, aided by its capacity to mobilise audit, verification and transport experts across the globe at short notice.
The Executive Vice President stated that presently, Greater Washington is the General Sales Agent (GSA) for Turkish Airlines, Discovery Air, Aero, the cargo consolidator for Dana and Medview Airlines
He said that the company‘s vision is to be the preferred logistics company in the West Africa sub region and to provide speedy, innovative, cost-effective supply-chain solutions that continuously meet and exceed our customers’ expectations; and be committed to our relationship with our customers and their success.
Awosan listed the GWL area of specialisation apart from air logistics, to include road, marine, virtual logistics, consulting services, technology, and GWL parcel
GWL is a subsidiary of Greater Group and a 2nd, 3rd and 4th party logistics company in Nigeria with core competence in supply chain management, air cargo services and custom clearing and handling.
