Stockbrokers under the aegis of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers have stressed the need for the Nigerian capital market to be competitive at the global level.
For the market to achieve that level of competitiveness, the stockbrokers said it was in need of vibrant entrepreneurs to boost its activities.
The stockbrokers spoke in Lagos on Tuesday ahead of the CIS’ Annual Conference, which is scheduled to take place on October 29 and 30 in Lagos with the theme, ‘Entrepreneurship and the capital market: Fast tracking a new economy for Africa’.
The stockbrokers said there was no way the market could realise its potential if entrepreneurs don’t run their companies well and list them on the Nigerian Stock Exchange.
The Chairman, Programmes Committee, Mr. Akeem Oyewale, explained that the conference had capacity to bring together entrepreneurs, investors, market operators and regulators together to boost the market and the nation’s economy.
Oyewale, who noted that over 750 participants were expected at the conference, said, “It has been proven that our annual conference is a platform for articulating issues that would help the government in its policy planning and implementation.
“Last year’s conference focused on the entertainment industry and many of the key players in that sector have been utilising the market facilities to expand their businesses.
“The Capital Market is not just about listing alone, there are other windows such as the use of debt instruments to raise fund. We are focusing on the entrepreneurs this year as part of our imput towards strengthening the African capital markets. We want to promote entrepreneurs because they occupy a pivotal role in the development of a capital market.”
