As Nigeria marks the World Environment Day, the World Bank has said it is providing the sum of $30 million as critical support for Nigeria’s response to climate change.

Speaking during this year’s celebration with the theme “Seven Billion Dreams. One

Planet. Consume with Care”, Mr Amos, a representative of World Bank also stated that the Bank is in strong partnership with the federal government, particularly with ministry of environment in identifying key priority environmental issues.

He said this partnership will help revise land and other forms of degradation.

”We are also supporting the efforts of the ministry and government in revising the unacceptable vibes rate of deforestation.”

While urging that resources are consumed with care, he said we should take into consideration how our personal consumption impact our immediate environment.

On her part the permanent secretary of the ministry of environment Mrs Fatima Mede stated that there is evidence that humanity is consuming more natural resources than the planet can provide in a sustainable basis. She said it is projected that by 2050, if current consumption and production patterns remain the same, “we will need three planets to sustain our ways of living and consumption.”

She however noted that in Nigeria government remains committed to implementing relevant actions to achieve sustainable development and environmental protection. As such she said the federal government has established various relevant institutions and mechanisms to address specific issues.

She said, “Government has established relevant policies and action plans, including the National Policy on Environment, Forestry Policy; Drought and  Desertification Action Plans; and National Adaptation Strategy Plan of Action on  Climate Change, etc.
